In honor of the late (and great) Coco Chanel’s birthday, we took a closer look at some of the major style and beauty moments that have become synonymous with the house of Chanel.
THE POWER OF THE LBD (Little Black Dress)
Whether it’s work, a cocktail party or a date—the little black dress is the go-to. We have Coco Chanel to thank for that, she championed the dress as a timless wardrobe staple. And it was Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel’s current creative director, who said, “one is never over-dressed or underdressed in a little black dress.”
TWEED FOR ANY SEASON
A Chanel tweed suit has long been a symbol of luxury, not to mention a signature look for the French brand. And as the house evolves, so does the look of the tweed into the most modern iterations.
A SIGNATURE SCENT
“A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future,” Coco Chanel once said. To this day, Chanel’s first fragrance Chanel Number 5 remains to be one of the most iconic fragrances of all time.
CHAINS ARE FOR LADIES
Chains on your bag? And around your neck? Coco Chanel started the accoutrement trend when she became tired of having to carry her bag in her hands and added thin, chain straps inspired by that of soldier’s bags to her now iconic 2.55 flap bag. Karl Lagerfeld has found many ways to update this look.
CAMELIAS: THE PERFECT FINISHING TOUCH
Coco Chanel fell in love with the camelia after receiving them as a gift, from there she began pinning them to her clothes and her hair. The flower which is also a symbol for longevity, has now become a symbol of the brand—and is seen throughout the ready-to-wear and accessories collections.
