Starting her life in the spotlight as a preppy student, her look quickly evolved as her status soared and the ‘Kate effect’ became quickly apparent; who could forget the royal blue Issa dress she wore to announce her engagement, that subsequently sold out within hours, or the flurry of Reiss dresses that kept sparking sales surges?

Donatella Versace was celebrating the return of the supermodel. Her roll call of girls was a stellar gang comprising of Gigi Hadid who had flown in specially to open the show, swiftly followed by Karlie Kloss, Adriana Lima, Kendall Jenner and Irina Shayk. It was a celebration of girls with personality, as far from identikit as possible. The fact that Cate Blanchett looked so ravishing in a custom made Atelier Versace black sequinned gown at the 18th Costume Designers Guild Awards last week is proof that Versace can work for all women. Chanel’s Paris-Rome Metiers d’Art show was “a breathtaking tour de force, revealing Karl Lagerfeld’s complete mastery of the language of fashion,” said Bazaar‘s editor-in-chief, Justine Picardie. “He took Sixties Rive Gauche Parisian style to a filmic fantasy of Rome, and made it look utterly alluring – and also completely modern.”
