Yesterday in Paris, Sarah Burton presented her latest offerings for Alexander McQueen, but some of her—and the house’s—best work can often be spotted on Catherine Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.
Ever since the humble St. Andrian took her last steps as a nonroyal into Westminster Abbey in a satin and lace dress with hand-appliquéd accents, Middleton majestically transformed into the image of a 21st-century style icon.
After her ascension to the throne, the love affair between Middleton and Burton was only furthered as the newly minted monarch stepped out in a bevy of looks from the creative director.
Middleton and Burton, together, have achieved a new visage for the staid image of the monarchy—one that embraces femininity and modesty, without pretension—in looks from casual, knitwear dresses with nautical influences to more fluid cocktail frocks in blush tones.
The subdued and streamlined aesthetic has legions of followers—and even a website, whatkatewore.com—monitoring Middleton’s every sartorial step, including every repeated outfit such as the fire-engine red dress she sported on several occasions.
Middleton seems to be drawn towards the more structured silhouettes from Burton, including coatdresses, some of which hint at her ever-growing baby bump
With Middleton due to give birth to her second child—reportedly a girl—this April, we can only imagine the fanciful creation that Burton has in mind for the upcoming christening.
No doubt it will be museum-worthy and fit for a redux of the stellar Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” which coincidentally, starts its run at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London on March 14.
