Bob Hope’s 1970s Palm Springs pad, part volcano, part flying saucer, was the setting for a Louis Vuitton Cruise show that took inspiration from both the natural world and the space age.
The showcase, Nicolas Ghesquiere’s 2nd Resort collection for Louis Vuitton, was held at the Bob and Dolores Hope Estate in Palm Springs yesterday morning.
In front of an audience that included Catherine Deneuve, Michelle Williams, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Alicia Vikander, models wove a complicated path down the monumental stairs, and through the perspex and wooden stools and round Bob’s pool. They were wearing a dazzling array of cropped leather bomber jackets in greys, greens and silver with slouchy, casual trousers. Yes, there were teeny tiny hot pants, the most spectacular in black leather with yellow and blue patters and a red snakeskin waistband but these worn with a relaxed, almost understated, striped cotton shirt.
The micro minis of previous seasons have given way to floor-length skirts and dresses, some of which were almost medieval in style with long cuffs and the most demure of necklines.
The uncompromising fierceness of some of the looks was offset by the most delectable, playful handbags and clutches in leaf prints or sky blue camouflage. And the shoes? Barring the odd exception in the form of a square Perspex heel, these were the most practical and comfortable of flip flops and hi-tops.
