What is grisaille…?

This 16th-century painting technique was a focal point for Piccioli. The process is about removing colour and stripping away to the core to reveal volume and shape, it also puts the emphasis on the woman, rather than what she’s wearing. “[It] brings the attention from the dress per se to the personality that gives life to it, from object to the individual,” Piccioli said in his show notes.

Piccioli called the white shirt,

“the most universal piece in the humblest fabric… and very common, in a way”
